What is GCE?
This is a question that you could spend twenty minutes explaining, but because you don't have twenty minutes to read, I'll try and explain simply. GCE, or Global Citizenship Experience is a private lab High School in downtown Chicago. We are nothing like your average school, and you can tell just by looking at our name! We offer a different way of learning, one that makes sense- a hands on approach to learning things relevant to real life. This sounds cool, but it's even cooler to experience it. We've gone to Ted talks (yes, the whole school), had famous Chicago Artists, met with huge investment companies, been to that Mercantile Exchange (Chicago stock market), studied gentrification in neighborhoods in Chicago by actually going to the neighborhood and talking with local residents and activists, the list goes on and on. If you think that is cool, or amazing, or inspiring (which you do), it gets even better. The support a student gets from GCE is overwhelming, teachers want nothing more than for you to succeed, and I know most schools say it (and they lie...) it's actually true here. My freshman year some students stayed until around 8PM with the teacher to finish a project, that same year when we wanted a basketball team but didn't have a coach, our principal stepped up and has been our coach ever since then- the list goes on and on. So, while the question is so simple, what is gce? The answer is surely not, but to sum it up in two words, I'd call it my second home.
I'm a Senior in High School at GCE Chicago, this is my fourth year here. Over the summer I went on a service trip for Habitat For Humanity in Alaska for two weeks. I spend my spare time working on web design and internet marketing, and have a new found love in community service. In college I'm looking to pursue service, hopefully through Habitat for Humanity because I really believe in what they do. If you want to see my photos from alaska, click HERE!
