Table of Values

For my Street Math class, our first action project was to pick a math topic and see how it relates to the real world. The topic I chose was table of values. I related it to electricity and showed why it is useful for electricians. Below is my prezi presentation of it.

The Best Bang for Your Buck

In my 162 class, for our third action project we were given five baseball players. Out of those five we had to chose the best players based on their stats and how much they make. It was all about player value. What we did was very similar to the money ball theory(spending the least amount of money you can for good/decent players. Basically getting the best bang for your buck). Below are all players, their stats, bio’s, graphs, and my rankings based on the info I found.

Prince Fielder: Prince Fielder was born May 9,1984 in Ontario, California. He played for the Milwoukee Brewers from 2005-2011. Prince now plays for the Detroit Tigers. His position is first baseman. Prince is married and has two children.

image

Robinson Cano: Robinson was born October 22,1982 in Son Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. He started to play for the New York Yankees in 2005 and still plays for them. His position is second baseman.

image

Jacoby Ellsbury: Jacoby was born September 11,1983 in Madras, Oregon. He made his baseball debut on june 30,2007 for the Boston Red Sox( still his current team). He has received the Silver Sluggger Award, Gold Glove Award, in 2007 he become a World Series Champion, and many other awards.

image

Starlin Castro: Starlin was born March 24,1990 in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic. He debuted for the Chicago Cubs on May 7,2010. His position is a shortshop. He has received two All Star Awards.

image

Wilin Rosario: Wilin was born February 23,1989 in Bonao, Dominican Republic. He made his debut for the Colorado Rockies on September 6, 2011. His position is a catcher.

                        Most Expensive Player

1.Prince Fielder(23M)

2.Robinson Cano(15M)

3.Jacoby Ellsbury(9M)

4.Starlin Castro(5M)

5. Wilin Rosario($491,000)

Prince Fielder makes 23 million dollars this year. He deserves that money. He is not over paid. Prince has great stats all around; RBI, HR, BA, and SO.

Robinson Cano gets his bang for his buck. He receives 15 million and he is worth it. He is an awesome player. He has great stats all around, especially his BA and HR.

Jacoby Ellsbury receives 9 million dollars. He is overpaid. He does not have the best HR, RBI, and his BA is ok.

Starlin Castro is worth his 5 million dollars. Overall he has good stats and is a good player.

Wilin Rosario gets paid only $491,000. He is worth way more. He should be paid in the millions. He has good HR, SO, and a decent BA.

Best Value(Stats and Money Value)
1.Starlin Castro
2.Robinson Cano
3.Wilin Rosario
4.Prince Fielder
5.Jacoby Ellsbury

I based my best value on the 2013 and 2012 stats, as well how much the player gets paid. To be the best value you have to have good stats and a good money value. I ranked my players from best to worst value.

Best Player
1.Prince Fielder
2. Robinson Cano
3.Starlin Castro
4.Wilin Rosario
5. Jacoby Ellsbury

I based my rattings for best player based on the 2013 season stats so far and the 2012 season stats. It is ranked from best player to worst. You can see the comparisons of their stats on the graph I made above.

Burgers!

For my third action project in my policy class, I had to identify a human right and volunteer at an organization that supported that human right. The right that I chose was housing. The organization I volunteered for was H.O.M.E. Home stands for housing opportunties and maintenance for the elderly. I volunteered for three hours there. Below is my experience working at Home and my reflections on it.

A burger. I look at burgers differently now. Why? You may wonder. Well it is all because of an experience I had volunteering at Home(Housing Opportunties and Maintenance for the Elderly). When I was at Home I offered my gardening skills and worked on a beatification volunteer project with other DMSF volunters( this service day was arranged by my scholarship Daniel Murphey) for three hours. We worked our hardest. We pulled weeds, weeds, and more weeds. Then we layed down mulch and flowers. Working on this project I meet a few new people I didn’t know. There were about 20 volunteers and we were divided into groups. I enjoyed working with my group. The volunteers there( even though most were younger then me) were very delightful, energetic, and hard workers. Even though we did not get to meet many people who lived there that day, I know they were happy with the work we did. I know this for a fact because one of the women who lived there was watching us work the whole time. After we were finished she thanked us so much for all our hard worked. She really loved what we had done. Now burgers. You may be wondering what does all this have to do with burgers as I mentioned at the beginning. Well a women named Natille worked there. She was so sweet( and I just loved her Jamaican accent). To show her appreciation for all the hard work we did she grilled us burgers. Now we were not suppose to be feed anything. We had only brought snacks to eat. However Natille was just so grateful for the work we did she gave us burgers anyway. Now when I look at a burger or eat one I always think of the experience I had at Home. And it is a reminder to me that when we help people(even though it might be a small action) people appreciate the help you give them. After finishing this service day I related it to my class and discussed it with them. They could relate to the human right I was addressing: Housing for the elderly. They talked about how their grandparents have care takers and those care takers do a lot for their grandparents. Some of them have to travel with the family and be away from their own family to take care of them. The question posed was: is doing this kind of work a burden or something they enjoy doing? What do you think?

Is McDonald`s on Top of the Food Chain?

For my second action project in my policy class, I had to make a info-graph. The info-graph had to be on a certain topic, that topic had to be in a local reign, and had to show a monopoly. The topic I chose was McDonald`s and how it is on top of the food chain. Below is my info-graph, my link to see the post on Facebook, and my biography.

The Greatest Athlete of All Time

For my second project in my 162 class, I had to compare two athletes and decide which one was the greatest. The two athletes I compared were Willie Mays and Bo Jackson. They both were professional baseball players, however Bo Jackson was a professional football player too. Bo Jackson played baseball for 8 years receiving three awards and played football for 4 years and received over 5 awards. However,in his career Willie Mays played for 22 years, received over 42 awards, and is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Below is a prezi and chart comparing Willie’s and Bo’s stats. Based on the stats, number of years played in the pro’s, money made, and awards received I would say Willie Mays is the greatest athlete of all time.

Bridges, bridges, and more bridges!

image

In my Urban Planning class, we learned about bridges. We went on a field experience to take a tour of the different bridges in Chicago. On the tour we learned about the different parts of the bridges; the trust and joints. For my project as action, I had to design and make a bridge. I had to see how many books my bridge could hold without breaking. My bridge was able to hold 10 books. Below is a video of my group testing how many books my bridge could hold and pictures of my calculations:

Warning: Hazardous road conditions are ahead.

image

For my first action project in my policy class, I had to fins an issue in my community and come up with a resolution to solve the problem. Then I had to find who I was going to address this issue too. Below is my letter to the Mayor explaining that a traffic light needs to be put up on 147th st in Dixie Hwy.

Dear Eric J. Kellogg,
The year was 2008. My father was driving down 147th st in Dixie Highway. A man was coming out from McDonalds and thought the traffic was clear. He was wrong. He ended up crashing into my father’s car and totalling it. Fortunately my father was not injured. However, this example just shows the root problem of 147th st in Dixie Highway. That is a very busy street. If you are driving and trying to come out of a business( i.e. McDonalds) or a side street onto 147th st trying to merge into traffic is very hard and sometimes dangerous as you can see. Many people in the community complain about this problem. Even though they complain about this problem nothing is being done to solve it on this street. If you look at the map to your below you see the road construction being done on the surrounding streets, but on 147th st no work is being done to it. I’ve lived in this area for over a decade and this street has been the same since then. I want to see change! I propose that a traffic light be added. If there is a traffic light drivers coming out of a business or side street would be able to come out easier and merge into traffic more effectively. If a driver is trying to make a left or right hand turn onto a street or business, traffic will not be bagged up. Also adding this traffic light will allow pedestrians to cross the street safely. In conclusion, adding this traffic light will make the flow of traffic much better and less hazardous. People in this community will feel safer either if they are a driver or pedestrian knowing this traffic light is up.

The AAGPBL

For my 162 class, we had to chose a topic that showed segregation in sports. I choose to research the AAPGBL( All American Girl Professional Baseball League). That league was the first women’s professional sports league in America. It was founded in 1943. My thesis is that people use to think women could not play sports and be masculinite. The AAPGBL changed the way people thought about women playing sports. Below is my prezi presentation to prove my thesis:

Star Sundial: by JP

For the last few weeks in my light and sound class, we have been studying about time. We discussed the speed of light and the theory of time travel. For my last action project,I had to do a science and math paper of a sundial. The purpose of this paper was to get skills in writing a scientific paper and to describe my prototype of my star sundial. In the paper, I talked about my prototype, included a sketch of it, and discussed how it would work. Also, in my paper, the math I used in my sundial, and a list of references. Below is a slide-rocket presentation of my paper:

A lesson Plan for the future

image
For my last action project, I had to make a lesson plan for what we will be taught in the future. In my lesson plan, I have a Spanish teacher teaching a student Spanish but in a modern way. There is this device that transform the classroom into any Spanish speaking country. The student is taken to Chile, where he practices his new vocabulary by ordering food in Spanish. This project was fun to do because it was nice to plan a lesson of the future. Below is my podcast of my lesson plan:
