For our final project in 162 course, we were asked to create a game that will help people learn about specific charities. We have the choice of doing any type of game either a game that exists before or a new productive game that we can make. Me and my partner decided to focus on the NBA cares charity and what they do. Our game is the cups and penny game that we got from playing the first day of class. I am very proud of the final product that me and my partner came out with. I got to learn a lot about basket ball players and what they do, as where before this project I thought that their lives is only playing basket ball. Learn more about the game by reading our report below:

Hoops for Humanities!

This is a game that will be teaching you about the NBA cares and what they do to help their communities. This is going to be a simple game with simple rules that you can follow. Our goal is to get people to enjoy playing our game and at the same time walk away with some facts about what the NBA players are doing outside of their court. We want people to see how a lot of their heroes are doing some work to have a better world. The purpose of this game is to make people want to help in their communities by whatever they can contribute. We looked at the NBA cares web page and we also gathered information from the United Nations Foundations website. One main thing that we learned is that no matter how famous you are or what position you are at work you can still help with many things and an easy one is making kids smile. Who are we to not help? David stern who is the commissioner of the NBA himself helps out with the NBA care projects like painting homes. Get that as an example and go out and help. The smallest thing you see is going to make a big change in our world.

Now lets explain our game, there are 10 basic rules that you have to know to play the game:

1- Players have to stand on the line

2-Three throws total

3- No help from group members nor the other group

4- Equal amount of players on each team

5-30 seconds to answer a question

6- Bonus question is 15 seconds, with doubling the points

7- distance is 40cm in between cups

8- Players are 50cm away from the table

9- Players limbs can cross the line but cannot cross the table

10- No jumping allowed. Jumping in place is fine

I think from reading our rules you have an idea of what the game is about. Basically there will be four cups on a table and each cup will be labeled with a different number which is going to be 1 to 4. Next to each cup there will be a stack of cards that will include two questions, two facts, and a bonus question. Cup 1 will have the hardest questions and cup 4 will have the easiest. Also cup 4 will have the most points points, while cup 1 have the lowest points, you only get the points if you get the answers right. Bonus questions will double up the points of your answer, you have 15 seconds to answer, however the other questions you will have 30 seconds per question to answer. I hope you enjoy the game and leave with great facts about the National Basketball Association players and what they do to the world, that will make you want to help.

For our Food For Thought class we each had to create a four panel mural. This mural should have four different parts representing each unit we have covered in class this term. Each panel must connect to the other and stand on it’s own. The purpose of this action project was to demonstrate understanding of four snapshots of agricultural history and envision sustainable food production. I am very proud of my drawings for my four panels.

“There are vastly more chickens raised for meat than any other kind of farmed animal and virtually all are factory farmed.” I chose a chicken as my main character in my story. I have four panels and each panel represents a different unit in our course. We studied Life, Death, Decay, and Birth. I chose three main words that describes each unit and I will be explaining about them further in the report.

If you look at my image I have the first three panels drawn in black and white that represents the past. I chose the colors black and white because first it represents the past and also it represents the unseen or the blindness of the world. Where as my fourth panel is fully colorful and this is because its the unit that shows the future farming method. I chose permaculture as my farm technique, it is the type of farm where everything flows and relies on each other.

For my life panel I chose the word traditional, because the way the chickens are raised are in a traditional farm with the same methods over and over again. For the second panel that is death, I chose the words factory, system, and global. I chose the word system because it is when the chickens go through all the machines and get chopped down, and this is a worldwide process. A great fact about factories and companies is that during 1950 to 1960 Poultry companies began to achieve total vertical integration. which is interesting to know and compare to our day now. As of for the Decay unit I chose Cooking, awareness, and alarming. It is basically alerting people from restaurant food and food they don’t know about. Lastly our last unit Birth I picked the words organic, local, and innovation. I am a person that refers to organic because I believe that they are healthier than GMOs. From an interview I conducted with Marc Bernard, who owns an organic farm. I asked about his opinion of organic farming and GMOs he said, “We can make more money with GMOs, but we will not get great healthy food”. This saying made me think of making my future farm all organic and a permaculture farm for the last panel. that was my poster and THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE FARMING!

For our Food course we had to create a presentation explaining either the Pros or Cons of GMOs. I chose to challenge myself and be a Pro GMOs, during my project I found that this was a position with a lot of people defending so I tried to be with it and prove that it is good. I agree that GMOs do provide food and sustenance to be people who don’t have it and have many other values. However I still do think that GMO food is not as healthy as organic food with all the right genes. Overall I am proud of my project and am impressed by how much research i did to defend such a hard side.

For our math and baseball course 162 we had to create a scouting report showing our investigation of five players. The purpose of this project was to use statistics to understand the overall value of baseball players. During this project I learned a lot about baseball and how most of the time it is not fair with players and their salaries. One thing I am proud of from my assignment is the organization of the graphs and the explanation I have for each of them. I really enjoyed doing this project and if I had the choice I would do it again. Overall I think this project turned out well. Please click on the PDF attachment below:

For our Food For thought course we had to create a food review. The purpose of this project was to test whether there is difference in taste between organic/fresh and processed food. Me and my partner, ZP chose to make a documentary about fried chicken because we thought it would be a easy dish to purchase and make. After analyzing the fried chicken so closely I would still eat it because it tastes good but the health effects are a little concerning. One thing that I am very glad I did was working with a partner and getting to hear different ideas from both sides that would make our project excellent. I am very proud of our video please have a look at it below:

For our Eat course our unit two action project was to create a lab report. We did this to explore the different chemical reactions of food. We made cupcakes and learned how to substitute an important missing ingredient, baking soda. We did this by learning how to create a new leavening agent by having a acid and base ingredient from the pH scale. To replace the baking powder I used olive oil and applesauce. Below you’ll see the results in my lab report. One thing i’m proud of in this project is doing all the different calculations and the conversions from US metric to millimeters. One thing I really struggled with during this project was making sure that all my calculations are right. Please have a look at my lab report below:

Introduction:

This report will be talking about substituting a leavening agent in a cupcake recipe by having a basic and an acidic ingredient. I got a cupcake recipe and I had to make it without the baking powder which is the leavening agent. In order to replace this I looked at the pH scale and according to that I got one basic and one acidic ingredient. My first substituted ingredient is olive oil that have a pH of 8 which leads to it being basic. My other ingredient was the applesauce it have a pH of 3.5 that is acidic. With that I feel that my cupcake is going o have a great apple taste.

Research Question:

My guiding question that I will be answering in the report is, What happens when you replace baking powder to olive oil and applesauce in a recipe?

Hypothesis:

If I mix apple sauce with oil then they will react and make a leavening agent.

Materials/ Ingredients for one cupcake:

1/12 Cup sugar

1/24 Cup butter

1 Egg

1/6 tsp Vanilla extract

3/24 Cup all-purpose flour

1 3/4 tsp Baking powder

1/24 Cup milk

Replacement:

1/4 Olive oil

1/2 Applesauce

Materials:

In medium bowl, cream together the sugar and butter

Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla

Combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture and mix well

Finally stir in the milk until batter is smooth

Pour or spoon batter into the prepared pan

Add the leavening agent into each cupcake spot(
for experimental group only)

Data

Control group: It is nice and crusty, it is moist from the inside, it rose properly

Experimental group: raised from the edges, sinked from the middle, sides are crunchy, chewy on the middle.

Formula used:

1 cup- 240 mL

1 tsp- 5 mL

Conclusion:

Overall based on looking at the data I show above I can tell that my cupcake experiment with the leavening agents I predicted was wrong, but it had a great taste. My cupcakes had sunken down from the center instead of rising and the edges is what rose. they had a chewy taste and for my final recipe I had chose cupcake number 6 because it had the apple sauce taste, chewy, and it was crunchy from the sides. With all that I can say it was a great experiment to try and even though my prediction had failed I can still say: It didn’t rise, but it did have a great taste.

For our 162 math and baseball course we had to compare two athletes. I picked Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane who are both soccer players. During this unit we spent a lot of time learning how to use and make graphs. We also interviewed a minor league baseball player; Joe Perona. I had a great time talking to him and learned a lot about the process of getting drafted into to professional or semi professional baseball. It was also helpful to work with my peers and get constructive criticism. All in all I think my project turned out great and am really proud of it.

In our Food For Thought course we just finished researching our chosen ingredient; mine was Tea. The purpose of this project was to see where our food comes from before it is in the store, or in your plate. In order to do this we researched an ingredient that we felt connected to and wanted to learn more about. During this process I realized how I never thought about the origin of the food I eat. I also learned a lot about Ahmed Tea – which is what I drink every day after dinner. One thing I am very proud of is reaching out to to Ahmed Tea company and getting an email back from them. It was great to connect with the company, located in London, and get great information back. Please enjoy looking at my Prezi below, and learning about how tea gets into your cup.

In Unit of our Math & Baseball course, 162 we learned a lot about segregation in sports. Before I took this class I never knew anything about baseball and never knew that there is such a segregation in that sport. However now that I am taking this class, I am beginning to realize what an important part baseball has in our history. This unit has really helped me understand a lot about baseball in society because it gave me a chance to talk to baseball fans and understand why they like it. I learned a lot of interesting facts during this course like how and where baseball originated. The project is below is a presentation about women baseball league. Me and my partner talked about AAGPBL( All American Girl Professional Baseball League). To learn more about that check out our Prezi presentation below:

In my food redux course, I created a garden that show foods that we have researched on. My favorite part about this project was looking at different vegetables and flowers and learning about the time they are planted and harvested. One main thing I learned in this process is a lot of tips for gardening. Please view my sliderocket below and check out my garden!
