From February to April 2012 I worked on an organic farm on the Big Island of Hawaii.  For 9 weeks, I lived in the town of Ka’u immersing myself in the culture and learning how to farm.  I went without knowing anybody but luckily left having formed friendships I know will last for the rest of my life.  Almost everything we ate, we grew. There were few things we got brought in for us and we made a plethora of vegetables, fruits, and greens to have with every meal.  Not only that, we did a lot of service within the community by selling a little bit of everything that we grew at the local farmers market and participating in a community-wide pond cleanup.

My 9 weeks in Hawaii was truly one of the best experiences of my life.  Not only did I learn so many skills like cooking and gardening but so much more about myself and what I want from life.  I had never been to Hawaii before and it was such an interesting way to experience it that is more rich than just a vacation to paradise.  I can honestly say it changed who I am and although scary, the absolute best decision I’ve ever made.
