Four our WAI class our action project two was to create a time machine. The time machine consists of one individual or collective memory. I chose to tell the story about the first time I went to New York City with my family. One thing I learned is how to structure and essay and I am very proud of my visual representations. Below are my visual with a caption, and below that is my essay.
I learned from my identity wheel that one of my personal traits is being sociable like many of the people in NYC. But, many of the people there are very closed off and unapproachable. On the contrary they were most fascinating to look at; I loved the trendy styles and intriguing fashion.
People in NYC
The weather was horrible — pouring down rain the entire time. We went to the statue of liberty but we could barely see it because it was raining so hard. Then later, we were walking to the theater to see a play, I was completely soaked so we had to stop at Kmart to get me a new pair of pants to wear. They were khaki army pants from the boys department, at the time, I thought they were very stylish. Unfortunately me and my dad got drenched again by a car whizzing past and spraying the filthy street water onto us. Sadly I think many people can identify with this experience because it seems to be a frequent experience.
AtmosphereOne of my happiest memories is when I went to New York City ( NYC) with my dad and my stepmom. I was in the fourth grade and had just turned ten. NYC is one of the coolest places I have ever been. To get there we had to take a plane to Long Island and then a train to Manhattan. It was beautiful because the city was lit up like the stars brighten the sky. The sidewalks are humongous and the roads are jam packed with cars. It was fun to be in the hustle and bustle of people, however, the poeple are extremely hot and cold. On the contrary they were most fascinating to look at; I loved the trendy styles and intriguing fashion.During our trip we didn’t do very much shopping but I did purchase a few things. While walking through the kiosks and shops in Chinatown I bought a silver key chain shaped as a bear. I also have a multi-colored purple scarf that my dad and stepmom picked out.

Another thing we did in NYC was eat; we had pizza and bagels. Both taste very similar to the food in Chicago, but it was an abundance of fun eating them in NYC. I was a bit surprised at the quality of the food because I had heard that those particular foods are excellent in NYC, but I didn’t find them to be especially profound. The best thing I had was apple cider on the way to Grand Central Station. We came across it because the smell was completely delicious.
To conclude our trip, we went to visit my dad’s Aunt Helen. She doesn’t live in the city so we had to stay overnight. The next day lots of people came over and we all had brunch. I don’t remember the food; but I do remember chewing an entire pack of doublemint gum. I’m not sure if that was related to the quality of food or not. After brunch we spent the night again, and the next day we went to the train to return home.
This is a really potent memory because it has shaped who I am. The trip to NYC is one of the few trips me, my dad and my step mom have taken together as a family. It is very important for all of us to spend time together; and even better when we are doing fun things. NYC was such a great choice because it gave me an opportunity to see the world and know that there is even more out there to offer.
I had an unquestionably great time in NYC. This memory reminds me of my grandmother because her greatest memories are with family also. I asked her, what does the word memory mean to her? She said ,“The word memory reminds me of one of my happiest memories; when all of my brothers and sisters were together.” My grandmother and I both value time with family.
In conclusion one of my happiest memories is when I went to NYC with my dad and stepmom. We went sight seeing, even though NYC itself is already a sight. We visited family and shopped around a little. We ate good food. All in all it was a marvelous trip.
