For my first action project in my policy class, I had to fins an issue in my community and come up with a resolution to solve the problem. Then I had to find who I was going to address this issue too. Below is my letter to the Mayor explaining that a traffic light needs to be put up on 147th st in Dixie Hwy.
Dear Eric J. Kellogg,
The year was 2008. My father was driving down 147th st in Dixie Highway. A man was coming out from McDonalds and thought the traffic was clear. He was wrong. He ended up crashing into my father’s car and totalling it. Fortunately my father was not injured. However, this example just shows the root problem of 147th st in Dixie Highway. That is a very busy street. If you are driving and trying to come out of a business( i.e. McDonalds) or a side street onto 147th st trying to merge into traffic is very hard and sometimes dangerous as you can see. Many people in the community complain about this problem. Even though they complain about this problem nothing is being done to solve it on this street. If you look at the map to your below you see the road construction being done on the surrounding streets, but on 147th st no work is being done to it. I’ve lived in this area for over a decade and this street has been the same since then. I want to see change! I propose that a traffic light be added. If there is a traffic light drivers coming out of a business or side street would be able to come out easier and merge into traffic more effectively. If a driver is trying to make a left or right hand turn onto a street or business, traffic will not be bagged up. Also adding this traffic light will allow pedestrians to cross the street safely. In conclusion, adding this traffic light will make the flow of traffic much better and less hazardous. People in this community will feel safer either if they are a driver or pedestrian knowing this traffic light is up.
Sincerely yours, JP
